{"id":8367,"date":"2023-04-03T10:58:57","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nnyagdev.org\/?p=8367"},"modified":"2023-04-03T10:58:57","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:58:57","slug":"4-4-nnyadp-dairy-cow-heat-stress-research-at-herd-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nnyagdev.org\/index.php\/2023\/04\/03\/4-4-nnyadp-dairy-cow-heat-stress-research-at-herd-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"4\/4: NNYADP Dairy Cow Heat Stress Research at Herd Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6024\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6024\" src=\"https:\/\/nnyagdev.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/k5176-3DairyDICow722USDAKeithWeller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"96\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo: USDA\/Keith Weller<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CHAZY, N.Y. \u2014 Miner Institute\u2019s Director of Research Katie Ballard will make a presentation entitled \u201cWhat the Cows Told Us: The Impact of Heat Stress on Northern NY Dairy Farms with Varying Heat Abatement\u201d on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the Herd Health and Nutrition Conference in Syracuse, NY.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDairy cattle respond to heat stress in several ways that can impact their health, appetite, milk production, and reproduction as well the farm economics,\u201d Ballard said. \u201cFluctuating periods of heat stress during the summer do not allow the cows the time to acclimatize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>With small grants funding from the farmer-driven Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) from 2015 through 2019, Ballard led research into the impact of heat stress on dairy cows and calves and evaluated opportunities to apply heat stress abatement systems from sprinkler systems to fans to reduce that impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ballard\u2019s studies have shown that episodic bouts of heat stress impact all farms to varying degrees regardless of the type of heat abatement system.
