Corn Testing and Breeding in Northern New York in 1999

This report includes a summary of 1999 commercial hybrid corn trials in northern NY. For this region, results are divided into 2 maturity ranges:

Early (Test A), 1400-1750 Growing Degree Days, 70-80 Days Relative Maturity

Early (Test B), 1700-1900 Growing Degree Days, 80-90 Days Relative Maturity

The NNY corn variety testing program is designed to screen about 60 corn hybrids each year, and reports results in recommendations to farmers in the region. 1999 tests were planted at the Miner Institute Farm, Chazy, in Clinton County, at the Canton research farm in St. Lawrence county, and on the Ron Robbins farm in Jefferson County. These sites were selected to gain a cross section of environments across the NNY region.

Test results are useful to NNY farmers choosing corn varieties best adapted to their farms. Results also help seed companies select which of their hybrids to sell to NNY farmers. Tests over the years have helped NNY farmers increase yields, and select varieties with maturities well adapted to the NNY growing season.

Cornell corn breeders also use the same sites in developing inbred and seed parents for hybrids that are specifically developed for NNY conditions. Inbreds from this program are released to seed companies for their use in developing hybrids adapted to farms in the region.
