2000 Alfalfa Yield Trials Summary COMPANY AND EXTENSION REPORT J. L. Hansen, D. R. Viands, S. M. Haner, and C. L. Morehouse Department of Plant Breeding, Cornell University http://www.plbr.cornell.edu/pbbweb/foragetest Alfalfa yield trials are conducted annually by the Forage Breeding Project at Cornell University. Funding for these trials is provided primarily by the companies that submit cultivars in the trials, and by the New York State North Country Development Program and Integrated Pest Management Program. This document, the Company and Extension Report, is a detailed report of the yield of legume (alfalfa, red clover, birdsfoot trefoil) cultivars and experimentals entered in the trials. The growing season in NY was wet and cool. The state averaged over 5 inches of rain in April, May and June, and averaged over 4 inches of rain in July and August. As a result, some harvests were delayed due to the weather conditions. The alfalfa trials are usually planted in five or six replications in partially balanced lattice designs. The trials are managed to achieve the highest yields possible, such that fertilizer, soil pH, weeds, and insects do not limit yields. In 1998 and 1999, trials of potato leafhopper resistant and susceptible alfalfa cultivars and experimentals were planted in 10 replications, 5 sprayed with insecticide and 5 not sprayed. PLH populations were small this year at the trial sites. In 2000, significant yield differences between resistant and susceptible cultivars were due mainly to a carry-over effect from severe PLH damage in the 1999 trial seeding year, and due to a late September harvest where the resistant cultivars yielded less than the susceptible cultivars. The complete report concerning potato leafhopper resistant cultivars of alfalfa, funded by the New York State IPM Program, will be available after Dec. 15th.
