Performance of beardless spring triticale and oats planted with field peas at Willsboro, NY.
Triticale-pea and oat-pea mixtures have potential for providing a high quality forage source for dairy cattle while providing a companion crop for alfalfa or grass seedings. The possibility of doublecropping by following this crop with a planting of soybeans-sorghum (Milage) also exists. Galaxy and Alpine are new beardless/short beard forage spring triticale varieties that will be in some of the triticale-pea mixture sold as TRIPPER in 2000. The current TRIPPER mixture contains Plains spring triticale and Packer peas. SPRINT is a mixture of Royal oats and Packer peas. Long, rough beards on triticale can reduce palatability, beardless types should alleviate this problem.
Mixtures were planted on April 2, 1999, at Willsboro, NY. Conditions were warm and dry throughout the trial. Only 1.49 inches of rainfall was received between April 1st and June 5th, resulting in low yields and higher than normal forage quality. In vitro true digestibility (IVTD) and digestible NDF (dig. NDF) were determined by digesting ground forage samples for 30 hours in rumen fluid from donor cows. Crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were determined by wet chemistry.
