| Field Crops
More than half – 54.9% - of the farm acreage in Northern New York is
cropland. Forages are grown on some 465,089 acres (2002 Census of
Agriculture) in the region. Corn is grown on 126,875-plus acres in NNY.
Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) field crop
projects are designed to increase farm profitability, improve crop
production efficiency, and enhance environmental stewardship. Projects focus
on all aspects of production from evaluating crop varieties and improving
nutrient management to dealing with crop pests and using organic production
methods. Researchers work with such crops as corn, soybeans, grasses, flax,
sunflowers, small grains and dry beans.
