Learn more about Alfalfa Snout Beetle (ASB) research in NNY below and here:
ASB Nematode Rearing & Application Handbook, www.alfalfasnoutbeetle.org
The alfalfa snout beetle, introduced to the US from Europe through the port of Oswego, NY, in 1896, now infests more than 500,000 acres in New York State. Infestations left untreated can result in losses of more than $1,000 per acre in alfalfa; a crop critical to NNY’s $580 million dairy sector. The farmer-driven Northern NY Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) began funding research on ASB and its control in the 1990s when the pest’s devastating effect on regional alfalfa fields became apparent. NNYADP’s ongoing commitment to this research fostered a sound, science-based approach that has culminated in a two-pronged biocontrol system utilizing naturally-occurring persistent soil nematodes and progressively-bred ASB-resistant alfalfa varieties.
