2013 Soybean Variety Trial Data Posted

Soybean production in Northern NY has increased significantly in the last 5 years: from approximately 5,000 acres in 2007 to approximately 14,000 acres grown in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties in 2012. To support farmer interest in the crop, the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) funded 2013 soybean variety trials conducted by Cornell University at two sites in the region.

Read more about the 2013 soybean trials conducted at Robbins Farms in Jefferson County and at the Miner Institute in Clinton County.

Latest NNY Maple Research Results Posted

UIhlein Maple Bottles web2.25

The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has posted the results of its latest maple research project focused on increasing sap yields and profitability for regional maple producers.

From 2011-2013, project leaders Northern New York Maple Specialist Michael Farrell, director of the Cornell Uihlein Maple Research Forest at Lake Placid, NY, and retired Cornell Maple Program Director Brian Chabot evaluated the effectiveness of a relatively inexpensive changeout of equipment to improve sap gain in three Northern New York sugarbushes.

In one 3,000-tap research area at the Parker Family Maple Farm in West Chazy, old spouts and droplines were utilized as a control method in the first-year of the research study. The data analysis showed more than $12,000 in potential profit from unrealized sap yield in that sugarbush area in 2011.

Learn what happened in 2012 with new spouts and droplines in that same sugarbush. . .

NNY 2013 Corn Grain Yield Data Released

The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has released the results of its 2013 corn grain performance trials. The trials are designed to aid corn growers, extension educators and seed companies by evaluating hybrids for yield capacity, stalk and root strength and maturity under Northern New York growing conditions, says Cornell University Plant Bleeding and Genetics Researcher Margaret E. Smith.

The corn grain crop in Northern New York is valued at more than $50 million.

The NNYADP-funded trials of 30 early and medium-early maturity hybrids planted at Madrid and Chazy, NY, test popular hybrids as well as new or experimental hybrid seed for yield, plant vigor, standability, and moisture content.
