The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be mailing the 2012 Census of Agriculture forms to collect information on American farms, farmers and agricultural crops. The information is important to the agricultural industry, government and private program funders, commodity representatives, the media, and many others. Farms of all sizes are encouraged to complete the form – available online and in hard copy and file it or return it by mail by the February 4, 2013 deadline. County Farm Bureaus receive Silver Key awards
The St. Lawrence County Farm Bureau was presented with six Silver Key Awards recently. Read more in this Daily Courier-Observer news story. The three farmers in the photo: Jon Greenwood, Kevin Acres and David Fisher are all members of the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program farmer-advisor committee.
The Jefferson County Farm Bureau received Silver Key Awards for excellence in local and state/national policy development and implementation, information and public relations, agricultural education and promotion, leadership development, membership, and young farmer programming.
The Lewis County Farm Bureau was recognized with Silver Key Awards for excellence in local and state/national policy development and implementation, information and public relations, agricultural education and promotion, leadership development, and membership.
Homesteading Fair to Return to NNY in 2013
Lowville, NY — The Cornell Cooperative Extensions of Lewis and Jefferson Counties have set the 2013 dates for the Homesteading Fair that debuted this past September. The event that drew the attention of the New York Times and visitors from Long Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut will be held September 6 and 7.

Educators will cover the three basic financial statements every farm business should use, recordkeeping systems, inventory management, cash flow vs. profitability, crop insurance and risk management.
